Mei’s reactions and brain waves are fascinating.

I’ve been working with her for three days now—ever since Seth had to leave to help his father and the Ravens—and everything that I’m seeing is brand new.

Supers—if they’re all like Mei and Blade—are definitely different from humans.

Mei is currently attached to the EEG, the blood pressure monitor, the brain wave monitor, the ECG, and the VO2 Max monitor. I’m watching everything I can think of to see what her reactions will be when she uses her magic. She’s lit up like a Christmas tree.

“Are you sure all this is necessary?” she asks, twitching under all the cables. “Surely there’s a better way?”

“If you can only do this for me once, then I’m going to monitor every single little thing I can think of,” I say without looking up. I’m focused on a screen next to me, trying to make sure everything is perfect. Mei is giving me one shot at this, and I don’t want to mess it up.

“I guess.”

I can see that Mei is regretting giving me this kind of access to her powers, but it’s important. We need as much information as possible, in order to find a way to beat whatever it is that’s killing her.

“Okay, I’m ready.” I step back from the machines. I can’t keep delaying—we have to test while we can.

“What do you want me to do?” Mei asks.

“Try to use the spell web, just like you did the last time. We need to replicate one of your attacks. Just pull on the magic, and then let it go.”

“And you know what to do if I have an attack?” she asks, clearly nervous.

“I’m great in a crisis,” I say, doing my best to make her feel better. I give her the wide-eyed look I always gave the police officers. She doesn’t look convinced.

“What if this is the time it completely devours me?” asks Mei. Her eyes are filled with shadows, and it’s clear she’s more scared of this than she’s making out.

I reach out with one hand and place it on her arm. “It won’t be. You’d have far more serious markers in your vitals. You’re showing up as healthy and hearty. It’ll be fine.”

“Okay.” She takes a breath. “Here goes.” Mei sits up straighter in her chair and closes her eyes. She’s completely still, and it’s like she’s making herself into a statue. I can’t feel her magic, but the monitors around me start to move, indicating a reaction on the inside. The EEG in particular is lighting up with visible reactions.

And then suddenly there’s a huge jump, and then a huge dive in the numbers. I look over at Mei, trying to figure out what happened. “What did you just do?” I ask. “Something weird happened on the monitors.”

“I hesitated.” Mei makes a face.

“Interesting.” I grab my pen and make a scribble on my notepad. “Keep going. You can do this.”

Mei takes a deep breath and then closes her eyes again. And that’s when I feel it.
